MBSA set to collect RM10mil in fines.
THE Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) is expecting to collect RM10mil during the next two months from fines owed to the council. The council is offering motorists 50% discounts if they settle their dues between now and May 31 as part of their campaign to collect fines.
Shah Alam mayor Mazalan Mohd Noor said errant defaulters owed the council RM60mil in arrears. He said there were 250,000 unsettled fines and more than 80% were owed by traffic offenders. In fact, Mazalan said 50% of the arrears amounting to RM30mil were owed by the traffic offenders. He said each of the traffic fines amounted to between RM60 and RM200 depending on the offence.“This is a good offer and I hope the Shah Alam residents will come forward to pay up,” he said.
Besides traffic offences, Mazalan said the defaulters included residents who were fined for breeding aedes mosquitoes, traders who had violated council rules and regulations, those carrying out businesses without approvals and other offences. He said during the campaign period discounts would be given to all those who came forward to settle their fines but the amount would be determined based on the discretion of the officers.“However, we will not give discounts to those fined for breeding aedes mosquitoes since we consider this a serious offence,” he said.Besides the permanent counters at Wisma MBSA in Shah Alam, Sungai Buloh and Kota Kemuning, Mazalan said their mobile collection unit would be mobilised every day including weekends.“We want to provide the public with easy access to pay their arrears as we realise that some of them find it difficult to come to our offices,” he added.Mazalan said the council was also considering taking legal action against offenders who ignored the fines.
